While illegal immigration is fundamentally a federal issue, border-states, such as California, bear a disproportionate burden of the costs associated with a dysfunctional federal policy. Our state is financially hemorrhaging from the costs associated with the high rate of illegal immigration in California. Our health costs have soared, our prisons are clogged with violent offenders who are here illegally; and our school curriculums are being subverted by those who do not speak English.
Faced with a devastating budget deficit, California must address the costs associated with this issue and work to reduce the state’s exposure to the financial effects of illegal immigration.
I have been engaged in this topic for many years – both as a member of the Assembly and now as a member of the Senate. I remain involved in the issue and support proposals that bring a common-sense approach to a dysfunctional and counter-productive system.
