Internship Opportunities

I am always pleased to learn of so many college students eager to participate in state government. I realize the value of the hands-on learning experience attained from an internship.

Interested students can apply to volunteer for a semester or during the summer in our Capitol or district office located in Roseville. An internship offers students a unique opportunity to assist staff in research, gain valuable experience aiding in constituent outreach and see the California legislative process in action!

All internships are non-paying positions. Students are strongly encouraged to work through their college or university to receive academic credit.

1. How many days/hours can I intern per week?
   You and your supervisor will determine the hours and days that are best for you and the office. Keep in mind that if you are interning for college credit, most programs require you to intern a minimum number of hours per week to be eligible for the credits.  Most interns work between 15-25 hours per week.

2. Can I request to work in a specific area in the Senator's office?
   There are several areas within the Senator's office that need intern participation. These areas are Constituent Affairs, Communications and Legislative Affairs.Interns are encouraged to indicate on the application a specific area where they would like to be placed.  Of course, placements are at the discretion of the Chief of Staff.
   • Constituent Affairs analyzes incoming communications and responds in a timely manner to constituents of the 1st Senate District.
   • The Communications office is responsible for preparing Senator Gaines to communicate his message, as well as preparing staff to communicate to the media on the Senator's behalf.
   • Legislative Affairs provides strategic planning and guidance to Senator Gaines and senior staff on all matters related to legislation.

3. What kind of work will I be doing as an intern?
   Some of the responsibilities may include: answering phones; taking messages; gathering information on groups or organizations; general clerical duties, researching legislation, and assisting in the planning of special events.  Again, we will try to place you in an area that might be most beneficial to your area of study.  

4. If I apply for an internship and am not selected, can I re-apply for the next quarter/semester?
   If you are not selected for the semester in which you are applying, you are welcome to apply again for the following semester.

5. Is there an age requirement for interning?
   Interns must be at least 18 years of age and enrolled in an accredited college/ university.
