Dutton Principal Co-Author of Legislation to Allow Voters to Decide Fate of High Speed Rail
Calling it a “train to nowhere” and misleading the public on the true costs of the project, Sen. Bob Dutton (R-Rancho Cucamonga) announced this week that he has joined Sen. Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) as the “Principal Co-Author” of Senate Bill 985, which asks voters if they want to proceed with California’s proposed high speed rail project.
“It’s become quite clear that voters were misled when they approved nearly $10 billion in bonds for the project in 2008, “Senator Dutton said. “Since that time, cost estimates have more than tripled to nearly $100 billion. This is truly a train to nowhere and it is time to let voters decide if the state should continue forward with this project.”
Dutton and LaMalfa pointed out that in the past the California Supreme Court ruled that Proposition 1A’s ballot language was misleading, the High Speed Rail Authority admitted to using government funds to lobby Congress and the State Legislature, Congress has withdrawn future funds from the project, the Legislative Analyst Office has called into question the legality of the financing for the proposed first leg of construction, and the High Speed Rail Peer Review recommended not building the project.
“The costs of this project have already tripled and I would fully expect those costs to go even higher before it is all said and done,” Senator Dutton said. “I would much rather fund additional teachers, police and firefighters than pay the $180 million in service debt when the first $2.7 billion in bonds for this boondoggle of project are sold.”
Dutton and LaMalfa, who already have 30 co-sponsors for the legislation, say that if the Legislature moves quickly there is still time to put the measure on the November ballot.
